Survival tips

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 21 years old and had just finished my student teaching experience the Friday before. I was fortunate enough to have had a full weekend to prepare for my first German teaching assignment. The students had a long-term substitute the last two months and had watched just about every movie from the last decade. The students who usually enjoyed watching a movie at school had gotten to the point of actually wanting to learn something. I was entering a German teaching position two weeks prior to the Christmas holiday break, and the students hadn't learned any German in over two months. I was super excited!

In my education career I’ve had the opportunity to work as a teacher at the high school level, a building administrator at the junior high level, and now at the district level as a central office administrator.  In all of these positions I’ve either experienced myself or witnessed six common problems that seem to affect all teachers. make friends with librarian

Is it your first year of teaching?  I know it's easy to feel overwhelmed with all the things you have to do before the kids actually come to school. Just remember you are not alone, and there are colleagues who can support you, like librarians. Being a librarian, I always try to help out the first-year teachers and offer assistance whenever they need.
