Use the internet safely

Internet usage presents a quandary as teachers and district personnel argue who should be in charge of classroom use. Fear of legal action, such as in one school district where a student’s parent signed an Internet usage letter waiving legal action against the school, but filed a complaint anyway when the student was found on an improper site in class. The case has not been decided yet, but the district still has to pay its legal costs.

Using sight and Dolch words
I have found the following words and lessons worthwhile for struggling students. They are especially effective if used as part of a lesson and not as an end in themselves. If a student can memorize seven digits, such as a phone number, they do better with these words. If they cannot master seven digits, I found more success using a strong phonics approach with some sight words.

Use animal rights to engage students
One sure fire way to get students interested and involved is using lessons and issues related to the environment and animal rights. I started a 527 Wildlife Club. It was named for the dominant Yellowstone female wolf killed in Montana. She was wearing a radio collar and shortly thereafter most of her group were also killed. This and major kills in Idaho took place after the gray wolf was removed from the endangered species list by the Secretary of the Interior. After reading the story of 527's life, students were eager to take action.
